Best Picture, 1983

Awards presented April 9, 1984

The nominees were ...
... when they should have been ...
And the Oscar went to ...
Terms of Endearment. A hodgepodge of family comedy and tearjerker that comes to life largely because of the vivid, eccentric performances of Shirley MacLaine, Jack Nicholson, and Debra Winger. MacLaine and Nicholson won Oscars, as did James L. Brooks for producing, directing, and writing.

... when it should have gone to ...
The Right Stuff
Tom Wolfe's book peeled off some of the gloss and veneer of the Mercury astronauts, outstanding test pilots who were recruited for a job that at first required them only to have the skills of your average human cannonball, while the publicists, under the leadership of Life magazine, wanted them to be squeaky-clean Eagle Scout types, instead of the earthy human beings they really were. Writer-director Philip Kaufman skillfully adapted both the letter and the spirit of the book -- and then was overlooked by the Academy for the Oscar nominations he deserved.
