Best Picture, 1988

Awards presented March 29, 1989

The nominees were ...
... when they should have been ...
And the Oscar went to ...
Rain Man. Undeniably entertaining, with two star turns from Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise (who, I think, gives a better performance than his co-star, having to grow and change as a character instead of relying on a supply of tics and quirks). Rain Man also benefited from its release during Oscar season -- that period between Thanksgiving and Christmas when buzz develops and lingers until the awards are given out. And Rain Man is full of buzzy bits, most of them supplied by Hoffman.

... when it should have gone to ...
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
A truly inspired idea -- that cartoon characters actually lived in a part of L.A. called Toontown and were considered lower-class citizens by flesh-and-blood types -- is brilliantly executed. Its astonishing blend of live action and animation won a raft of technical awards, including a special one for Richard Williams's animation direction. But the flesh-and-blood Academy seemed to regard the film itself as second-class, overlooking Robert Zemeckis's direction and Bob Hoskins's performance in the nominations.
