Best Picture, 2004

Awards presented February 27, 2005

The nominees were ...
... when they should have been ...
And the Oscar went to ...
Million Dollar Baby
Clint Eastwood's emergence as a major auteur in late mid-life is one of the great unforeseens of movie history, once as unlikely as if, say, Taylor Lautner were to turn out years from now to be an Oscar-winning director. Million Dollar Baby is, to my mind, his best film, with stunning performances by not only the Oscar winners Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman, but also Eastwood himself, who received an acting nomination in addition to his producing and directing wins. The movie stands out from the year's other nominees for the simplicity and integrity of its storytelling -- the screenplay, by Paul Haggis, was nominated but lost to Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor's over-quirky Sideways.
