Honorary Award, 1934

Awards presented February 27, 1935
Shirley Temple with 1934 best actress winner Claudette Colbert

Temple's honorary award citation read, "in grateful recognition of her outstanding contribution to screen entertainment during the year 1934." Five years old, younger than the Awards themselves, she remains the youngest person to receive an Academy Award. She was given a miniature Oscar, the start of a tradition of rewarding "outstanding juvenile performance" that continued, off and on, until the 1960 awards ceremony, after which child performers began to be considered alongside adults in the leading or supporting performance categories.
