Best Sound, 1936

Awards presented March 4, 1937

The nominees were ...

And the Oscar went to ...
San Francisco, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio Sound Department, Douglas Shearer, Sound Director.
Shearer's unfortunately anonymous sound crew deserved the award, not just for recording Jeanette MacDonald, but mainly for the sound effects supplied for the earthquake sequence, which is probably the only reason anyone watches the film today.

The visuals for the earthquake sequence were supervised by James Basevi and edited by Slavko Vorkapich. The special effects category had not yet been returned to the awards, so neither was nominated. A case could have been made for nominating Vorkapich for editing, however, but he wasn't included among the nominees.
