Winocki (John Garfield) helps the wounded Quincannon (John Ridgely) land the plane in Air Force
In this generally exciting movie about the lives and deaths of a bomber crew during the Wake Island and Coral Sea battles, the propaganda is as thick as the flak. The excitement comes from director Howard Hawks's usual fast-paced tough-guy camaraderie; a cast that includes John Garfield, Gig Young, and Arthur Kennedy; and the cutting by Warner Bros. editor Amy, who had begun his career in silent films. He was a favorite of director Michael Curtiz because of his handling of action sequences. Amy also directed several of Warners' B pictures.
