The Greatest Show on Earth. Seriously now, is there a more undeserving best picture winner in the history of the awards? Even
Broadway Melody deserves a little recognition for venturing forth into the uncharted territory of the sound musical.

The most celebrated of all Hollywood musicals now frequently turns up on critics' lists of the greatest films -- musical and nonmusical -- of all time. Gene Kelly's performance of the title song is his finest moment on film, and Donald O'Connor's "Make 'Em Laugh" is a slapstick classic. Jean Hagen received one of the movie's two nominations as supporting actress for her shrewish, squawking Lina Lamont, who gets some of the best lines in Adolph Green and Betty Comden's screenplay. (The other nomination was for Lennie Hayton's score.) The movie isn't even harmed by its weakest section, the overextended "Broadway Rhythm" ballet, with a
pas de trois for Kelly, Cyd Charisse, and her dress's windblown train, which is at odds with the period style of the rest of the film.
