This hugely entertaining adaptation of the James Jones novel is one of the most mature films to come out of the Hollywood of the 1950s. It still looks good today because of its marvelous casting and efficient storytelling, and because it makes as few compromises as possible with the censorship and jingoism of the era. From Here to Eternity has stood the test even in a much more permissive age. It tied the record for most Oscar wins that had been set by Gone With the Wind, winning eight including best picture, supporting actor Frank Sinatra, supporting actress Donna Reed, director Fred Zinnemann, screenwriter Daniel Taradash, cinematographer Burnett Guffey, as well as for sound and film editing.
