And the Oscar went to ...
|
Carl Jules Weyl |
One of the most entertaining movies ever made, The Adventures of Robin Hood has stood the test of time far better than the one that beat it for best picture, You Can't Take It With You. Weyl's handsome fairytale-medieval sets, which photographed beautifully in Technicolor, have a lot to do with the pleasure of the movie. Weyl was a contract production designer at Warner Bros. from 1934 to 1947, but he was also a well-known Los Angeles architect, responsible for the landmark Brown Derby restaurant, among other buildings of the 1920s. This was his only Oscar, though his credits include such landmark Warners films as Yankee Doodle Dandy and Casablanca.
